HOW DID UNCERTAIN TEXAS GET ITS NAME ?
Once upon a time…..miles & miles up river the cargo boats were loaded with supplies and headed down Big Cypress River. Every barrel, bag or crate was properly labeled to be dropped off at one of the ports along the riverbanks in East Texas. Back in those days people were not quite as literate as you and I are during this day and time. But, everyone was knowledgeable of a standard deck of cards. Each port along the way had a designated card from the deck that represented their port. As careful as the boat laborers were with the cargo sometimes a card would fall from the barrel, bag or crate leaving this item “UNCERTAIN” of the destination. This would leave a random amount of supplies left on board with no knowledge of which port it should have been left at. As the cargo boat would leave the river banks of Big Cypress River and head down government ditch the last stop is where all of the “UNCERTAIN” items were left just prior to the cargo boat heading across the Louisiana line and on down Red River. As time went on this stop became known as “UNCERTAIN”. Whenever the townsmen would go to their local port to claim their supplies and find something missing from their supply list they would load up their horse and supply wagon, hit the stage coach dusty trails and tell the misses, “I am off to Uncertain to claim the rest of our supplies”.
That’s my papaws story and I am sticking to it!!!!
